Business broker fees in Canada
Brokers can be helpful, but it's worth knowing what they usually cost before you decide.
How brokers usually charge
- A success fee (commission) paid when the sale closes, as a percentage of the price.
- A minimum fee on smaller sales.
- Sometimes an upfront retainer or marketing fees.
- A "tail": you may still owe a fee if you sell to a buyer the broker introduced, for a period after the agreement ends.
Typical ranges
For businesses under $1 million, commonly reported commissions are about 8% to 12%. BDC says around 12% is typical for deals under $1 million, and that the percentage usually drops for larger deals. ExitNavigator reports minimum commissions of about $10,000 to $25,000 and retainers of about $2,000 to $10,000.
